Dental implants have risen in recent years to become one of the most popular methods of replacing teeth. If you’re missing any, you’ve probably heard about them and wonder whether they could be the best option for you.

However, you might also wonder what it’ll actually be like to live with dental implants—what they’ll feel like in your mouth or when you use them. While it’s impossible to really know without experiencing it yourself, here’s a little bit of information about what having dental implants is like.

Background on Dental Implants

In case you’re not familiar, dental implants are a method of replacing teeth that distinguishes itself from other methods by being surgically placed into the jaw. They come in three parts—the post, i.e. the metal rod actually inserted into the bone, the restoration (crown, bridge, or denture), and the abutment that connects the two.

If that sounds complicated, don’t worry! All you need to know is that connecting a false tooth directly to an implant makes it stronger, more durable, and much more realistic.

Will Dental Implants Look Different in My Mouth?

Dental implants are connected to your jaw just like your natural teeth, which makes them stunningly beautiful and realistic. The false teeth are also generally made from high-quality porcelain, which is a material that can beautifully mimic the natural sheen of enamel.

For these reasons, dental implants are incredibly hard to detect once they’re in your mouth. You might feel a slight difference in texture when you run your tongue across the false teeth, but this should be minor and invisible to observers.

How do Dental Implants Feel?

Unlike your natural tooth, your dental implant doesn’t contain any kind of nerve tissue. This means that your dental implant won’t really “feel” like anything—instead, any sensation you think is coming from the tooth is actually due to the surrounding gum and bone tissue.

This can certainly be a little bit strange at first. Eating with a tooth you can’t feel might not really seem natural immediately, but it’s certainly not unpleasant. After a while, you’ll forget that your tooth isn’t actually real!
